When You Meet Jesus
In Luke chapter 5:1-11, we see Jesus’ first encounter with Peter. Peter was a very interesting character. By trade he was a fisherman and I would say one heck of a fisherman. In this encounter, Jesus gets into Peter’s boat and asks Peter to push out a little, and then Jesus begins to speak to the people. After He had finished speaking, Jesus tells Peter to go out into the deep waters and let down the nets. We must remind ourselves at this point that Peter had been fishing all night and had caught absolutely nothing. But Peter still followed what Jesus told him to do. Peter went out and dropped the nets down. I have to interject a thought here. If I had been in Peter’s place, I would have probably told Jesus He was crazy, I was tired and I am going home! Get some other idiot to take you out fishing. But that is not what Peter did. Peter went out into the deep water, cast out his nets and went fishing because Jesus asked.
As you know from reading the story, Peter’s nets were full of fish almost immediately! So many fish that they needed help because the boat was going to sink. Peter’s response to Jesus at this moment was interesting. He fell down at Jesus feet and said depart from me, for I am a sinful man. That is a remarkable response to the situation! Most of us would be looking for some kind of rational response to the situation but Peter quickly realized that he was in the presence of someone special. Jesus goes on to tell Peter that he will become a fisher of men not fish. Peter quickly lays down his nets and follows Jesus without question.
When you first met Jesus as Savior did you question his calling or did you just follow? It seems that the further we get from our initial meeting with Jesus, the more we question his calling. If we are not in the Word studying, then we question even more. It is important to lay down our nets and follow after Jesus without questioning. In doing this, we go against our culture but it is the calling of every Christian. We are to follow after Christ without restrictions or reservations. Take time today to examine your life and see what nets you need to throw down and then begin to follow after Jesus.
In Christ's Love,
John
